First Day of Second Grade Lesson Plan
7:40 am - 8:00 am: Enter the classroom, find seat, & start morning work

I will greet students at the door and tell them that I will be there every morning to greet them however they please (high five, a hug, a hand shake, a wave, etc.)

Ask students to go in, find their name on their desk, and begin morning work

Morning work will be a crossword puzzle with each students name on it

8:00 am - 8:10 am: Housekeeping

Remind students that I am working hard to pronounce everyone’s name correctly and to please let me know if I make a mistake or if they go by something else

Lunch count
8:10 am - 8:40 am: Morning Meeting

Explain that after attendance, lunch count, morning work, announcements and the bells, we will have morning meeting everyday at the same time

Explain that we will sit on the carpet all together for morning meeting in a circle so that we can all see each other

Explain that I will call people to the carpet for morning meeting

Explain that during morning meeting, we will have greetings, share time, show and tell, or an activity or song and give an example of each

Greeting: handshake with everyone, “my name is Ms. Hughey. Nice to meet you”

Sharing/ show and tell: “I am Ms. Hughey and this is a picture of my family.”

Song: If you’re glad to be at school in the tune of if you're happy and you know it

8:40 am - 9:00 am: Brain break and sort supplies

Use a go noodle for a brain break and explain what they are, how we will use them

9:00 am - 9:05 am: Bathroom expectations
9:05 am - 9:20 am: Bathroom break and snack
9:20 am - 9:35 am: Read Aloud

Read the book “How I Spent My Summer Vacation” by Mark Teague
9:35 am- 10:00 am: Writing activity

Brainstorm if time allows

Have students write about “My Summer Vacation”, allows me to assess writing but also engage in individual conversations and interactions

10 am - 10:10 am: Address hallway procedures and expectations

Alien Greeting
-
Have students form a circle. Then ask each to imagine they are from another planet and to think of a sound or movement that would be used as a “hello” on their fictional planet. Give them a few minutes to think of something. When ready, ask each student to greet the student on their left with their unique “alien greeting.” Next, have everyone share their greeting with the class along with some insight into how they came up with their idea.

1:10 pm - 1:40 pm: First day of 2nd grade portraits
1:40 pm - 2:00 pm: Make class rules together
2:00 pm - 2:10 pm: Student survey
2:10 pm - 2:30 pm: Go over end of the day procedures and complete them
2:30 pm: dismissal begins
